I installed the brake line that runs down the left landing gear. I opened the bleeder valve about 1 turn and attached a new garden poison sprayer ($10 at Home Depot). I safety wired the hose to the valve since I didn't have a fitting. I added 1 quart of aviation brake fluid and pressurized it. I pumped the brake until I saw brake fluid flow through the nylon tubing and then let it flow some more until it was clear of air bubbles. I detached the hose, closed the valve and then did the same for the other side. I went into the cockpit and pumped on the brakes many times and some time really hard. No sponginess. However there was a leak where the nylon tubing attaches to the right master cylinder. I couldn't get it to stop by tightening it. I removed it and found the ferrule was crooked. I tried to straighten it out as much as I could but it was already compressed around the tubing. I re-assembed it and tightened it and the leak stopped. I am not sure I trust it though. I need to order another ferrule (if that is what it is called). Overall the process was a lot easier than I expected. The only time I had seen this done was with a Piper Seneca and it took the mechanic 2 days to get this right. The Vans system is dirt simple compared to a Seneca. I passed my class 2 medical today. I have a BFR scheduled on Sunday. After that I plan to rent a Super Decathlon about once every two weeks until the RV8 is ready. |
