Today was probably the busiest day of the entire project. We woke up early this Sunday morning. I mounted a 110V winch onto the front of the trailer and attached it to the lower part of the landing gear. Christine's Dad came over and all three of us managed to get the fuselage onto the trailer without any problems. It was fairly easy with the winch doing the hard part. We laid down 1 x 4 boards over the ramps. We tied the furslegae down with straps and ropes. The drive was a bit nerve racking but thankfully there was little traffic at this hour of the morning. I took back roads and never exceeded 45 MPH. We unloaded the fuselage at the airport and wheeled it into its new home. After lunch we rented a U-Haul trailer. I can't remember the exact dimensions but it was the biggest one they had. We took it to the house and loaded up the wings and a few other parts. The trailer was barely tall enough to allow the wings to be loaded into the cradle once inside the trailer. A tip for anyone reading this wanting to do the same thing: rent a taller trailer. Once at the airport we unloaded one wing at a time first to saw horses followed by stabbing them into the fuselage and holding them there with temporary Home Depot bolts. We went back home and picked up the remaining large pieces, took them to the airport and then returned the trailer to U-Haul. |
